Born Free ‘Beyond the Bars’ Charity Ball

Pangea were delighted to attend the latest charity event by Born Free last month in London, the ‘Beyond the Bars’ gala. The Born Free Foundation is an international charity for wildlife which was founded in 1984 by actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, along with their son, Will Travers. After their work with lions during the making of the celebrated film, Born Free, the couple were encouraged to take action against animal suffering and promote that all wildlife should remain in the wild.
As a company with strong ties to wildlife and well aware of the pressures that animals face both in the wild and in captivity, Born Free is a charity close to our hearts and we were thrilled at the prospect of getting involved with their most recent event, bringing with us a life-size rhino, life-size lion, medium giraffe and small elephant sculpture that wowed guests on the night. There were also several other artistic creations by talented individuals available to see and purchase including a lion cub sculpture and an animatronic elephant!

Over 300 guests attended, accompanied by a number of famous faces. Classical singer Margaret Keys entertained with her incredible voice and James Lewis, TV auctioneer hosted an exhilarating live auction which raised hundreds of thousands for the foundation. Charity patron Joanna Lumley led an inspirational speech and tribute to Bill Travers, whilst Martin Clunes raised £54,000 in the auction for a walk-on role in his TV series Doc Martin. We got a chance to meet him in the flesh and introduce him to our rhino sculpture- he absolutely loved it!

A fully vegetarian, Indian inspired three-course menu was cooked by award-winning chef, Siriam Aylur, and proved in true Born Free spirit, that you don’t have to eat animals in order to enjoy a delicious meal. Goodie bags were stuffed full of sweet vegan treats and an insightful publication of the Beyond the Bars book provided valuable knowledge and awareness about the dangers of captivity and how the foundation is fighting to return animals back to the wild.
We would like to thank this spectacular organisation for a truly wonderful and influential evening, and we are so proud to support a foundation doing so much for wildlife across the world. We are excited to work with them in the future and look forward to introducing more sculptures at Born Free events.
