OUR STORY & AFRICAN ART

At Pangea Sculptures, we are fervently dedicated to showcasing the beauty and artistry of African sculptures to audiences around the globe. Our founder, Ian Unsworth, developed a profound appreciation for these exquisite sculptures during a visit to Africa, where he was enchanted by the fantastical animal sculptures on offer at roadside stalls. Ian engaged with the artists and craftsmen responsible for these creations, delving deeply into the rich tapestry of African art and sculpture. He acquired several pieces for personal enjoyment and arranged for a container of these magnificent animal sculptures to be transported to the UK, to share their allure with others. The reaction was extraordinary, with an eager public quickly purchasing the entire consignment within weeks.

Named after the ancient supercontinent of Pangea, symbolising the unity and interconnectedness of all life, our company has flourished impressively since its inception in 2014. This success culminated in the opening of our splendid showroom in July 2016, where we continue to display the stunning beauty and artistry of African sculptures to the world.

Whether you are in search of a distinctive artwork for your home, a striking focal piece for your business, or a remarkable addition to your garden, Pangea Sculptures offers something truly special. Driven by a commitment to quality and craftsmanship, we are dedicated to delivering the splendour of African art right to your doorstep.

Pangea Sculptures was born

A Trip to Africa

Ian Unsworth, the founder of Pangea Sculptures, embarked on a personal journey to Africa to visit his family. During his stay, he was deeply moved by the daily challenges faced by the local communities and felt a compelling urge to contribute positively to their lives. Driven by his compassion, Ian actively sought opportunities to make a meaningful difference. His efforts focused on initiatives that would improve living conditions and provide sustainable support to the people in Africa, reinforcing his commitment to not just witness but actively participate in fostering change where it was most needed.

We are Closed

Covid-19

Due to the unprecedented impact of COVID-19, Pangea Sculptures was compelled to close the doors of our physical showroom. Despite this setback, our commitment to supporting the African artisans, who have been integral to our success, remained unwavering. Recognizing the challenges posed by the pandemic, we swiftly adapted our operations to ensure continued support for these communities. We implemented virtual initiatives and online showcases to maintain engagement with our customers and sustain the livelihoods of the artists we collaborate with. This transition not only helped in continuing our mission but also strengthened the bonds with our partners during these challenging times.

Trip to see the team

African Aid 2022

In 2022, Ian and his team from Pangea Sculptures ventured to Africa to forge closer relationships with their colleagues and deepen their understanding of the region. This insightful journey led to the inspired creation of Africa Aid, an initiative dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for local communities. By engaging directly with these communities and utilizing their extensive knowledge, Pangea has been able to make substantial strides in fostering sustainable development.

Through Africa Aid, Pangea works collaboratively with local individuals and groups, aiming to empower them to shape their own futures more positively. The initiative focuses on various developmental projects that promote education, improve healthcare access, and support economic growth through skill development and job creation. This hands-on approach not only benefits the communities involved but also enriches our understanding and appreciation of the cultural dynamics that influence our work.

By committing to these sustainable practices and development goals, Pangea continues to build on the foundational belief that art and commerce can come together to bring about significant social change, enabling individuals and families across the region to achieve better, more fulfilling futures.

A Pangea Road Trip

African Aid 2024

In April 2024, our dedicated team at Pangea Sculptures set off on an enriching journey to Africa, aimed at strengthening bonds with our talented sculptors and their families. This expedition was not just a business trip, but a heartfelt initiative to connect with the communities that inspire our collections. We organized a series of gatherings including a festive lunch, a giveaway, and a celebratory party to show our appreciation for our teams’ hard work and creativity.

Our travels took us through the vibrant streets of Johannesburg, the serene landscapes of Zimbabwe, and the bustling markets of Kenya. These destinations were not only chosen for their geographical relevance but also for their rich artistic heritage. Alongside our team, we indulged in the local cuisine, embracing the diverse flavors that each region had to offer, which provided a deeper understanding of the cultures that shape our sculptures.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting a giraffe sanctuary in Kenya, an experience that left us all in awe of Africa’s natural beauty and wildlife. This visit was particularly inspirational, reminding us of the continent’s majestic and untamed spirit that echoes through our sculptures.

This journey was an incredible chapter in our ongoing story of collaboration and discovery, underscoring our commitment to the artisans we work with and the profound narrative embedded in each sculpture we share with the world.

A New Chapter

Moving Premise

In early 2025, we closed our showroom and moved into a larger warehouse facility.

Pangea’s online sales have grown dramatically, and our previous showroom simply couldn’t accommodate the volume or variety of sculptures our customers were requesting.

To meet this demand, we relocated to a new warehouse with the goal of keeping more sculptures in stock—or as close to in stock as possible!

We now operate primarily online, but you can still book an appointment to view our collection in person, making the Pangea experience even more flexible.

This setup may evolve in the future, but for now, it marks a big step forward for Pangea—and we’re just getting settled in.
